Major depressive disorder (MDD) is underdiagnosed, and a call to action to improve care has been issued by the National Institutes of Health, various medical specialty societies, patient advocacy groups, and national clinical experts. In order for clinicians to improve detection, it is important to 1) know how depression presents in older patients, which is different from how it presents in younger adults; 2) be able to sort through its differential diagnosis; and 3) use validated questionnaires to help with measurement-based assessment.
